Summary
Hello, dear readers! Today, I have an inspiring story to share with you—one that brings tears of joy and warmth to my heart. It’s all about the recent Special Olympics Unified Basketball Tournament that took place right here in Southwest Oklahoma. This event, hosted by various organizations and individuals, including the Great Plains area Special Olympics team, is a testament to the power of unity, inclusion, and the love of sports. So, let’s dive into the heartwarming details of this remarkable tournament.
Reuniting After a Hiatus
The Special Olympics Unified Basketball Tournament in Southwest Oklahoma was a much-awaited event, marking its return after a two-year hiatus. In 2019, 28 teams came together to participate in this incredible celebration of unity and athleticism.
Creating Friendships and an Inclusive Community
One of the most beautiful aspects of the Special Olympics Unified Basketball Tournament is the impact it has on the lives of the participants, especially the kids. Jerri Santos, a member of the Great Plains area Special Olympics team, emphasized how these games form lasting friendships and create a more inclusive community within schools.
“It forms a lot of friendships, it makes a more inclusive community in the school, and it’s just something I’m very passionate about,” Santos said.
The Power of Unified Sports
Unified sports, introduced in 2013, have been a game-changer for Special Olympic athletes. It’s a platform where individuals with disabilities and their non-disabled peers can compete together as teammates. The ultimate goal? To promote inclusion through sports.
Spreading Smiles and Acceptance
Kourtney Knutson, a senior who has been playing as a partner since 6th grade, shared her experience of participating in this event. She spoke of the immense joy of seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and the simple yet profound act of allowing them to be accepted and welcomed just like any other athlete.
“Seeing the smile on their face and just allowing them to be accepted and welcomed like all other athletes,” Knutson said.
The Joy of Connection
Joslyn Lockhart, another partner in the tournament, expressed her delight in playing a sport she loves alongside kids who share her passion. For her, it’s about opening windows to get to know people better and enjoying the game she adores.
“It just opens windows to get to know people better,” she said. “Basketball is my favorite thing to do because I like it.”
Community Collaboration
This beautiful event wouldn’t have been possible without the collaborative efforts of various organizations and individuals. Glen Gatling, from ‘All About Understanding,’ played a crucial role in providing referees and keeping score during the games. His commitment to supporting youth events and fostering community involvement is truly commendable.
“Anything that goes on with the youth, we want to collaborate with the community and be involved. So we’re helping them out,” Gatling said.
Join the Movement
As we wrap up this heartwarming story of the Special Olympics Unified Basketball Tournament, I want to invite you to join this incredible movement of unity, inclusion, and the love of sports. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of these young athletes and help foster a more inclusive society.
Thank you for being a part of this inspiring journey, and remember, together, we can create a more inclusive and accepting world for all.
